FDRSOS Case Study

CONTINUOUS 24X7 BUSINESS OPERATIONS WITH NON-DISRUPTIVE CROSS PLATFORM OPEN SYSTEMS BACKUP.

Reduce a full weekend, 48 hour, open systems local DAT tape backup of 100GBs to a few mid-week seconds. Then with an ultra high speed data transfer, directly across S/390 channels, put that backup under MVS security on mainframe tape without disrupting business schedules or network usage.

FDRSOS, is an MVS (OS/390) based Innovation product intended specifically to help safeguard valuable corporate data on open systems & LAN SCSI disk volumes resident within S/390 channel attached EMC2 Symmetrix ESP storage systems.

Together with advanced Symmetrix (ESP) data sharing technology FDRSOS presents a unique opportunity for an INNOVATIVE solution to the traditional open systems backup dilemma.

Key Features
  • Continuous Business Operations - Quiesce system update activity for the brief time it takes FDRSOS to communicate with a TimeFinder capable Symmetrix and it's done. Exploiting new Symmetrix cross platform TimeFinder features, FDRSOS reduces down time for open system backup to be next to nothing.
  • Non-disruptive backup - Open system storage administrators, using new FDRSOS TimeFinderâ„¢ commands, can create exact copies of production data, almost instantly. Put copies of open system backups to tape at your leisure, without the undue pressure of production schedule time constraints.
  • Reduce Network Traffic - Using cross platform mainframe channel access, not network communication protocols, FDRSOS allows direct ultra high speed back and restore between S/390 tape (or disk) storage and open system disk volumes.
Leverages Symmetrix ESP

The EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) enables MVS mainframe and open systems SCSI disk data to be co-located in the same Symmetrix. CIO's already consolidating Open System UNIX processors and LAN servers for better administrative management who take the next logical step to consolidate Open System disk storage, can now reap the added benefits of Continuous Business Operations, Non-disruptive Backup and Reduced Network Traffic.

FDRSOS leverages Symmetrix ESP to provide non-disruptive MVS (OS/390) backup of Open Systems (sector format SCSI disk) data to S/390 mainframe tape (or disk) across high performance mainframe ESCON channels.

Ultra High Performance of S/390

FDRSOS transfers data at megabytes per second vs. megabits. Communications based products clog networks and contend with their bandwidth limitations. Fully utilizing the ultra high performance of S/390 ESCON channels, and high capacity MAGSTAR and 9840/T9940 tape units; you can apply mainframe MVS (OS/390) storage management and RACF security to safeguard both open systems backup and restore.

INCREDIBLE HIGH-SPEED--the FDRSOS advantage

S/390 processors with ESCON channels and new technology MAGSTAR and 9840/T9940 tape units have incredible I/O capacity. Unfortunately, S/390 channels do not traditionally support the attachment of SCSI open system disk and MVS does not support the sector format used to record data on the open system volumes.

FDRSOS changes all that with an almost totally non-disruptive physical image backup for SCSI disk devices at the level of the Symmetrix logical disk volume and recovery for multiple volumes in parallel, independent of operating systems or networks.

Non-disruptive FDRSOS TimeFinder high speed full backup of Symmetrix logical disk volumes is especially well suited for protection of large databases and as a complement to traditional file oriented backups in a total disaster recovery solution.

HIGH SPEED S/390 MAINFRAME CHANNEL BACKUP OF OPEN SYSTEMS STORAGE USHERS IN A NEW ERA OF BUSINESS RESUMPTION PROTECTION.

Capitalize on the information sharing capabilities of the EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP).

Problem:

Data mining applications typically require hundreds of gigabytes of disk storage; some, inconceivably, require terabytes. Yet as they turn to open systems for these business critical applications, responsible managers at company after company are shocked by the lack of high capacity, fast and reliable data backup/restore capabilities, which are taken for granted on MVS mainframe systems. Existing distributed data backups don t hack it. Customers find they have no practical way to back up these huge open system data warehouses.

Circumstance:

S/390 processors with ESCON channels and new technology Magstar and 9840/T9940 tape units have incredible I/O capacity. Unfortunately, S/390 channels do not traditionally support the attachment of SCSI open systems disk. Nor does MVS support the sector format used to record data on the open systems volumes. EMC s Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) enables MVS mainframe and open systems SCSI disk data to be collocated in the same Symmetrix. This advanced technology allows CIO s who are already consolidating open systems UNIX processors and LAN servers for better administrative management to take the next logical step. That is to consolidate open systems disk storage. This advanced Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) technology also presents a unique opportunity for an INNOVATIVE solution to the open systems backup problem. For instance an opportunity to reduce a 48 hour open systems local DAT tape backup, of 100GB, to an ultrahigh speed 2 to 3-hour data transfer across S/390 channels directly to MVS mainframe tape.

Solution:

FDRSOS, a new MVS (OS/390) based, Innovation offering, is intended specifically to help customers safe-guard open systems storage & LAN SCSI disk volumes resident within S/390 channel attached EMC Symmetrix ESP systems. FDRSOS provides backup/restore of open systems volumes to S/390 tape (or disk) storage across high speed mainframe channels using direct disk access, not communication protocols. FDRSOS leverages the Symmetrix 5000 ESP ICDA ability to provide MVS (OS/390) access to both S/390 (CKD-format DASD) and open systems (sector format SCSI disk) data across high performance mainframe ESCON channels. While networked based products must contend with bandwidth limitations, FDRSOS is transferring data at megabytes per second vs. megabits. The FDRSOS advantage is INCREDIBLE SPEED. FDRSOS provides physical image backup for SCSI disk devices at the level of the Symmetrix logical volume and recovery for multiple volumes in parallel, independent of open system operating systems or network communications. High speed full backup/-restore of a complete Symmetrix logical volume being especially well suited for protection of large databases and as a complement to traditional file oriented backups in a total disaster recovery solution.

Benefits:

Fully utilize the ultrahigh performance of S/390 ESCON channels, and high capacity MAGSTAR and 9840/T9940 tape units; as you apply mainframe MVS (OS/390) storage management and RACF security to safeguard open systems storage.
