The EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) enables MVS
mainframe and open systems SCSI disk data to be co-located in the
same Symmetrix. CIO's already consolidating Open System UNIX processors
and LAN servers for better administrative management who take the

FDRSOS leverages Symmetrix ESP to provide non-disruptive MVS (OS/390)
backup of Open Systems (sector format SCSI disk) data to S/390 mainframe
tape (or disk) across high performance mainframe ESCON channels.
FDRSOS transfers data at megabytes per second vs. megabits. Communications
based products clog networks and contend with their bandwidth limitations.
Fully utilizing the ultra high performance of S/390 ESCON channels,
and high capacity MAGSTAR and 9840/T9940 tape units; you can apply
mainframe MVS (OS/390) storage management and RACF security to safeguard
both open systems backup and restore.
S/390 processors with ESCON channels and new technology MAGSTAR
and 9840/T9940 tape units have incredible I/O capacity. Unfortunately,
S/390 channels do not traditionally support the attachment of SCSI
open system disk and MVS does not support the sector format used
to record data on the open system volumes.
FDRSOS changes all that with an almost totally non-disruptive physical
image backup for SCSI disk devices at the level of the Symmetrix
logical disk volume and recovery for multiple volumes in parallel,
independent of operating systems or networks.
Non-disruptive FDRSOS TimeFinder high speed full backup of Symmetrix
logical disk volumes is especially well suited for protection of
large databases and as a complement to traditional file oriented
backups in a total disaster recovery solution.

Data mining applications typically require hundreds of gigabytes

channels using direct disk access, not communication protocols.
FDRSOS leverages the Symmetrix 5000 ESP ICDA ability to provide
MVS (OS/390) access to both S/390 (CKD-format DASD) and open systems
(sector format SCSI disk) data across high performance mainframe
ESCON channels. While networked based products must contend with
bandwidth limitations, FDRSOS is transferring data at megabytes
per second vs. megabits. The FDRSOS advantage is INCREDIBLE SPEED.
