INNOVATION introduces FDR/UPSTREAM version 3.5.0 for the z/OS
Storage Server as well as both the UPSTREAM client and RESERVOIR Storage
server component.
Topics in the newsletter and features released in this version include:
Training Class
The next training class held in Little Falls, NJ for FDR/UPSTREAM and UPSTREAM Reservoir
is scheduled for January 23-25, 2007. This seminar is a comprehensive three-day course for
both new and established users of FDR/UPSTREAM and UPSTREAM Reservoir. The extensive content
of the course material deals with both the client and backup server components. In addition to
the class room instruction there will also be numberous break out sessions.

FDR/UPSTREAM z/OS Storage Server component CRYPT for FDR/UPSTREAM... Data Encryption
The latest release of FDR/UPSTREAM V3.5.0 now makes available CRYPT for FDR/UPSTREAM;
a data encryption option as an additional-cost add-on, to allow encryption of secondary
copies of backup datasets intended for offsite transport and storage. These secondary
backup dataset copies are created using the Upstream VAULT facility. You may choose
among five encryption algorithms driven by an encryption key. This encryption key may be
user-specified or randomly generated for each backup, allowing a unique encryption key for
each.
FDR/UPSTREAM encryption can use the AES-128 hardware assist on IBM z9-109 processors
(and their successors) and the TDES hardware assist on z890, z990, and z9-109 processors
(and their successors), if enabled.
FDR/UPSTREAM client and RESERVOIR Storage Server component Linux on IBM Power Series support
FDR/Upstream has expanded its comprehensive client support to include Linux on
Power pSeries hardware (RS-6000) both as a client as well as the UPSTREAM RESERVOIR
Storage Server. The minimum release supported is SuSE Linux v9 (SuSE, RedHat or similar)
on IBM Power (p-Series) systems. It supports all of the same features available in any of
the other Linux implementations.
FDR/UPSTREAM now has complete coverage of every major operating system (AIX, HP-UX,
Linux, Solaris, Windows) in the data center, while offering a choice of backup servers
to include z/OS mainframes and with its RESERVOIR product includes Windows, AIX, SUN
Solaris, and Linux(x 86 Linux, Linux for zSERIES, and Linux for pSERIES).
Data Encryption
UPSTREAM Reservoir now has available support for encryption of vault
tapes, compatible with UPSTREAM/MVS using AES 128, AES 192 and AES 256.
Reservoir Encryption uses the AES standard levels of encryption for
vaulted tapes. This is a separately licensed product that is available
in a BETA release now and General Availability is expected in 1stQ 2007.
New support for SQL Server 2005
Introduced in UPSTREAM 3.4.0H client release is UPSTREAM support for
Microsoft SQL Server and support for SQL Server 2005. This support has
been integrated into the MSSQL plugin and allows seamless transition
from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. New features support the backup of all
databases with the database wildcard '*'.
GPFS support
UPSTREAM supports an extensive list of file systems and has extended
that support by adding support for the GPFS file system.

Daylight Savings Time Changes in the U.S.
Starting in the spring of 2007, Daylight Saving Time (DST) start and end dates for
the United States will transition to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
DST dates in the United States will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the
second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first
Sunday in November).
OES/Linux NSS volume backups from a NetWare system
With Novell's release of OES for Linux, neither the conventional method of Linux
backup nor the conventional method of NetWare backup will properly work for NSS
file system backups on Linux systems. Currently, Innovation has certified the
procedure for backup of these volumes over the LAN from a Novell server running
the NetWare operating system. In the future a release of UPSTREAM will be
provided which will backup NSS volumes directly on the Linux server.
HardLink Support
FDR/UPSTREAM support for hardlinks has been changed to reflect and support
movement of hardlinks. Since hardlinks may be moved without warning on some
systems (during defragmentation on Solaris systems for example), it is
recommended that all UNIX client systems be upgraded to the client release
v3.5.0 as soon as possible to avoid restore problems from old links merged
forward.
UPSTREAM nibbles, bits and tips
FDR/UPSTREAM support for 64-bit Windows for Itanium or 64-bit AMD/Intel
is now GA.
UPSTREAM supports SLES 10 and is now documented for the UPSTREAM Rescuer.
Linux – Director
The Director install for UNIX has been improved to use an included
JRE for Linux or Intel Solaris.
UPSTREAM RESERVOIR “Spare tank”
An optional profile definition Overflow Path, allows you to have
data written to an alternate location if the estimate shows that there is
insufficient space in the Data Path.
UPSTREAM RESERVOR Tape Vault and Tape History reports
A new and improved UPSTREAM RESERVOR Tape Vault and Tape History reports
with a whole new set of qualifiers. These include the Scratch Tapes Only
qualifier to the Tape Vault report which generates a scratch tape only report.
The UPSTREAM Director provides an extensive array of reporting and also provides
informational charts to visually provide information about your backups.
FAQs We have gotten questions raised to the UPSTREAM's support team about...
Q: Are you aware of a windows feature, journaling, that can replace
the standard archive bit to select files on incremental? Does UPSTREAM support that?
A: Yes, and UPSTREAM uses it on VSS backups.
Q: One of our Windows administrators wants us to backup its Windows
boxes with UPSTREAM, but he wants to know if UPSTREAM is capable of 'SYSTEM STATE BACKUP'
backup and if it is, what do I need to specify in UPSTREAM Parameters to get that kind
of backup?
A: Yes, UPSTREAM is capable of a system state backup. We recommend
that you use the UPSTREAM syntax to do a “full system backup”, which backs up
all local drives and the system state. The format for the file spec is:
FILES \\.
Typically any additional file specs are for excludes. Databases are generally done in a
seperate backup.
